SelfDesign Home Learning

A flexible option if you wish to homeschool your child

Pursue learning independently with your child

If you’re interested in homeschooling your child, SelfDesign Home Learning offers you the opportunity to do so.

It’s the most flexible option if you wish to take on the responsibility for your child’s education

How does it work?

If you’d like to homeschool your child, you are required to register your child in a recognized school as per the provincial School Act.

SelfDesign Home Learning differs from our regular K-12 program, SelfDesign Learning Community, which is an Independent Provincial Online Learning School.

SelfDesign
Learning Community

  1. Educator-led
You and your child work with a B.C. certified educator
  2. Online & external support
Your child is supported through their learning experience and have access to a wide array of resources, including our camps and gatherings and our unique Learning Experiences Library.
  3. Educator-led assessment
We assess learning through a process called Observing for Learning. Our B.C. certified educators map the learning that is observed to competencies within the B.C. curriculum.
  4. Receives high school diploma
Your child will earn credit for courses in grades 10 to 12, and can graduate with a BC Certificate of Graduation, Adult Graduation Diploma or School Completion Certificate. Your child will leave SelfDesign Learning Community after grade 12 with the same opportunities to apply for university or college as a child in a brick-and-mortar school does.

SelfDesign
Home Learning

  1. Parent-led
You as a parent take full responsibility for your child’s learning program and do not report to the school.
  2. Limited online support
You and your child have access to a number of subscriptions to high-quality learning resources, and receive newsletters with information about resources, opportunities open to home learners, and supports for learning at home.
  3. Learning not assessed
You take responsibility for the learning program and do not report to the school. Your child’s work is not assessed, evaluated and does not receive a report card.
  4. Does not graduate
Your child does not earn credit for courses in grades 10 to 12, nor do they graduate and earn a high school diploma.
